The problem with NOT preparing for breastfeeding

What’s the problem with NOT preparing for breastfeeding?

Audio Above:  Listen to Dr Robyn Thompson, founder of the Thompson Method, experienced midwife and nipple trauma expert, as she talks about some of the key reasons why she encourages women to seek breastfeeding information while pregnant.

Many women, particularly first time mothers, are focused on their labour and birth, hoping that breastfeeding will just happen.

For some women, breastfeeding will just happen

Logically, this makes sense because a woman’s body is physically designed to give birth to and breastfeed her baby.

It is one of the most natural things a woman can do right?

Unfortunately, this does not end up being the case for many women.

Why?

Well, there are a number of reasons!

➡️ It’s likely that the breastfeeding information you’ll be taught in hospital will be inconsistent, conflicting and quite possibly out of date.

➡️ It’s also likely that you’ll be rapidly processed because of time constraints with hospital policy, often placing you under pressure to make quick decisions.

➡️ And it’s likely that you’ll be taught or shown forceful breastfeeding techniques that are closely associated with painful nipple trauma

ALL of this creates unnecessary stress and can become quite overwhelming for the breastfeeding mother of a newborn baby, who already has enough to deal with.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

What if…  you could feel confident in your OWN knowledge to be able to make informed decisions, even in unexpected situations?

What if…  you were FULLY prepared for giving birth in the hospital system so that you could make the system WAIT while you considered your options?

What if… you REALLY understood how the decisions you made during your labour and birth influenced your breastfeeding journey?

It’s important to acknowledge that things don’t always go to plan, and medical intervention is required for SOME women and babies.

But for MOST women, medical intervention is NOT necessary.

An by being well informed and fully prepared BEFORE having your baby you can REDUCE THE RISK of common complications with both birth and breastfeeding.

But why should you trust the Thompson Method over information that’s out there?

Advice from well-meaning friends and family may result in you feeling pressure to appease them, but often leaves you and your baby in all sorts of trouble.

The reason why The Thompson Method is different to other sources is that it’s based on the PhD research from Dr Robyn Thompson a midwife and educator with over 45 years experience.

The evidence from her research clearly showed that painful nipple trauma was closely linked to common techniques that are being taught in most hospitals.

These techniques are forceful and outdated but unfortunately, many hospitals are still using and as a result, many women are experiencing nipple pain when breastfeeding.

But the Thompson Method is not just about the technique.

The research uncovered so many more factors that were contributing to painful and stressful breastfeeding complications for so many women.

And simply put, many of these complications can be avoided.

It’s a holistic approach and a proven method that’s designed to help you give birth to your baby and build a bond with your baby through breastfeeding for as long as you choose.
